10-4. Been through this mission a billion times!!! What am I missing? If you pound the base, the mission fails. If you help the bombers, the mission fails.

I tried listening to the conversation from the other pilots. Tom says; "Take out the AA guns". If you smoke the control tower, it still talks to the Zero pilots.

WTF is the answer???

Like yourself, its driving me nuts.
The most succesful stratedgy seems to be a bit of everything.
I come in very low and loose of all the rockets along the general line of the runway, that can take out a couple. I then do a slow banked turn to the left so I line up on the runway again for the next set of aircraft taking off. You can usually get at least 4 with rockets which by now have reloaded. If you then bank right towards the hills and keep lowish you can get passed the AA and get behind the last couple of the second wave that you missed on the runway. For some reason I was getting shot from behind, when there should not have anybody flying behind me, so I called up the cover (blue) which took that one out. Now if you turn back to the runway you should at full speed be able to get there to swat the third wave as it tries to take off. From there its the arial battle that lets me down, I cant get enough of the planes in the air, I think the program cheats as there are way too many planes compared with the number of waves that take off. I have got passed the second wave without loosing any bombers and even drop the first load of bombs so I think I am adopting the right stratedgy, Hope this helps, if you get further a different way let us know.

Well, like everyone else I had to do this about a million times, but I recently beat this mission and I'm not sure how I did it.

I know that when first approaching the airstrip, there is a red taget box at the base of the radio tower, so that was my first strike, I sent every rocket I had towards it. Then I started consistantly straifing the runway. I really didn't focus on anything other than that. I would say that I was able to shoot down at least 3 out of every 8 planes that try to take off. Make sure your squadron is in attack formation and use Frank's lightening attack whenever it's charged up.

Eventually, the planes stopped taking off and I was able to protect the bombers. After that, the objective is not complete until you destroy ever plane, hanger and AA gun around the airport. The mission then turns it's attention to some destroyers in the harbour to your left. There are some AA guns around the harbour and a convoy of tanks going through downtown Rabaul.

its hard but you have to keep the airstrip in sight and destroy about 4 of every 6 before the hit the bombers without straying from the airport itself. every time theres a break in the planes taking off hit an aa gun. i found jacks lightning attack good for taking out planes in the air as well as the blue sheild if any are behind you. the rest of the mission is relatively easy. just keep trying. also before the cinema scene in the very beginning i raise my altitude then level out and fire all my rockets at the enemy planes ready for takeoff. your men will inform you of kills during the cinema scene. i managed to take out 5 of the 6 planes doing this but only once averaging between 1 and 3

well hope this helps[/q] Thanks for the idea of missles b4 the cutt scene .it helps ..I still am stuck on this stupid mission ..grrrr .. im hitting the runway planes first then banking right. come back hitting AA guns and hangers .. bank right again. swoop on the planes about to take off .. aafter that i go to help the bombers . then back to hit airport structures ..but alas this mission may drive me to try a cheat code LOL

Actually I did this mission differently and passed in the first 5 attempts. I first did a defensive formation to keep my fighters together. I did use the command to send off one of my fighters to fight the enemy but I concetrated on the enemy planes especially when the bombers were over the airbase. I did hit some of the AA guns when I had a chance, but didn't finish them off until the bombers were safe. This may have been the hardest part of the mission because after I got past the first part on my 5th try I finished up the mission with no problem. Good Luck

Ok, this is what you do...

When you first approach the air station, fire rockets at the group of flak guns closest to you on your right (fire from far away so you can engage the fighters). Do a head-to-head pass with the 1st group of fighters, then swing around and hit them from behind. Once they are dead, hit the flak guns closest to you on your left. Do another head-to-head pass with the 2nd group of fighters, swing around again and kill them from behind. By now the bombers should be close to the airstrip, so engage the remaining flak guns. SHOOTING ROCKETS AT THE AIRSTRIP IS POINTLESS UNLESS YOU WANT TO DIE. Escort the remaining bombers away from the airstrip.

When the destroyers pop up as an objective, destroy the fighters above them first. Them kill the AA guns on the destroyers. More fighters will come in behind the 2nd wave of bombers, so take those new fighters out.

Finally, you have to eliminate defenses around the industrial area of Rabaul. Take out the comm center there (on your far right at the front when you approach that area) and their accuracy seems to drop a bit. Hit the flak guns at the back of the area next. By now more fighters will have spawned, so take them out. Knock out the AA guns protecting the oil depot, but leave the depot for the bombers. YOU"RE DONE WITH THE MISSION!

Fly slow and get as many planes and aa on the ground as you can - put the other guys in attack mode and send Frank in to help out on the ground whenever he's available. Get all the grounded planes and aa emplacements, when that's done, help finish off all the planes that are in the air. It can be done. I think the key is to fly slow and keep shooting; don't get rattled and don't get distracted with planes that are in the air until the ground is completely done.

This is hard as hell,one of my teamates tells me to take out AA guns,i did then the bombers die..I killed 2 out of six of the jap planes when they start to take off.But,SOMEHOW THE BOMBERS KEEP DYING.I NEVER REACHED A CHECKPOINT­!!
